Scienceclass#3 The weight Problem

Are you that person that gains weight even from eating some soup or some salad? Always wondering why others can eat tonnes of cake and chocolate and they don´t gain a gram on their rips?

Are you that person struggling with weight all year long and quietly asking yourself: "what is wrong with me?"

The comforting news is, you are not alone!

Weight is becoming a global problematic. And the worst thing is that this is the booming industry today. In other words millions of people earn their living by making sure we get fat and fatter. The food industry, the dieting industry, the fitness fellows, the plastic surgery branch...the list is endless. All of them will play to be on your side, but actually they are all pulling on the same string making sure you gain  weight or keep adding the gained weight. I´m talking of the giants in the business like coca-cola, Mac-Donald's, Kellogg's, Pizza-hut...yep! You get what i´m talking about.

In 2014 the world health organisation recorded 1,9 billion overweight adults and of which 600 million were obese. In 2013 42 million children under 5 years were overweight. The tendency is rising! Obesity is the pathological condition of overweight.

Its a sad world that we live in today. Sad why? Because in this crazy world, more people die of obesity (overweight) than malnutrition (underweight).
Scientists describe overweight as those with a body mass index of more than 25, and when this value gets 30 or more, the person is then considered obese.

To calculate your body mass index, divide your weight in kg by your Height in meters to the power of two. It carries the units kg/m2.

Body weight is a strictly regulated metabolism. Just like your breathing and your heartbeat. This regulation takes place  through hormones and other body self messengers like neurotransmitters which help the communication between different organs. This means that body weight is not just a result of sugar intake minus sugar outtake.

Don´t get me wrong there. If you eat a lot of sugar and utilise very little of that sugar, you will gain in weight. What i´m saying is, its not just that simple!

Though obesity is recognised as a disease, it is even more a symptom of many other diseases. This is to mean that obesity is a result of a malfunction of body processes.

Altered body processes that lead to fat accumulation, can have different causes (see part II).

A gain in weight is not just a result of fat deposition, it can also be due to increased muscle mass or even accumulation of body fluids. It can be a side effect of a drug that you are taking, or even a result of genetic predispositions not to mention a symptom of diseases like hyperthyroidism.

So it is important that before you start your fight against the weight, you know what kind of enemy you are dealing with.

Some people have a slower basal metabolic rate. This is the amount of sugar converted to energy at rest. meaning that some people will burn their calories while sitting and watching TV, while others will need to run 5km to achieve the same effect. Those are the lucky few who can eat tonnes and will not gain a gram.

Don´t be so fast in jumping into conclusions about the over-weight neighbor who can not take two steps without halting to snap some air because you don´t know her enemy!

Lots of luv,
